Book Review with a Cuppa

Welcome to Between the Bookends today! As a monthly contributor here, I’m mostly focused on books you can create yourself, but I’ll periodically share some other book-related posts. This month I’m coming to you with a book review and a cuppa instead of my usual Personalized DIY Books posts (which will return again next month).

I am not a coffee drinker, nor am I a tea drinker, but, as you know, the tagline for Between the Bookends is “books, cuppas, conversations, and friendship.” I do enjoy something warm to drink in the morning (a must in the wintertime!), so this month I’m sharing my favorite “cuppa,” homemade hot cocoa mix.

All things being equal, I’d love to sit down with a cup of legit European hot chocolate every day. It’s basically made with whole milk and a melted chocolate bar. Instead, I go for a healthier version for my morning drink. Cocoa that’s unprocessed actually has some great health benefits, and since I make this hot cocoa mix myself, I make it sugar-free. Hop over here to find my Rich Sugar-Free Hot Chocolate Mix. If you’d like, you can dress it up with a little Torani syrup in a flavor of your choosing (sugared or sugar-free)!

Now on to my short but hopefully sweet book review. It’s hard to review it without giving away too much!

“Man Made” by Gabrysia May

“Here you are safe. Here you are wanted. Here at The Human Zoo.” Upon the concrete island rooted off the shore of California, these robotic words echo through the lapping waves and into the ears of the prisoners trapped there. For the robotic race, it rings as a symphony; for Ginger and her family, it sits on their chests like a weight, serving as a constant reminder of where they are. Ginger listens to the unsettling lies, but she refuses to believe them. She forces herself to remember better times: times when humans were in control; when she lived in her own home . . . times when AboVE and the rest of the machines did not exist.

Ginger might not be able to control her situation but she has learned to control her thoughts, and though her mother thinks it’s a waste of time, Ginger has hope. Hope there are people out there that think like her—good people that don’t simply comply and do nothing. When her opportunity comes, Ginger watches her already upside-down world topple as she finds herself caught between the freedom of the human race and the victory of the machines.

My Review of “Man Made”

“Man Made” by Gabrysia May is a young adult fiction novel. In addition to being a clean and wholesome read, it’s inspiring. For a dystopian topic, the author really emphasizes hope and goodness throughout the book. May draws you in to a society where machines rule the world (the president of the country is a robot) and are just steps away from dominance while highlighting the the questions of what it really means to be human and what it really means to love, which are addressed beautifully.

The main character believes in herself and her ability to change the world for good, with the help of loyal friends and family. The characters in the book were loveable and relatable (except the bad guys, of course) while also being courageous and brave.

I read this book at the recommendation of a friend, and I really enjoyed it! It’s a page-turner, and I felt myself always wanting to just finish one more chapter.

This is the first book written and published by author Gabrysia May. She was just 16 years old at the time of the publishing! You can find “Man Made” at amazon.com.

Warning: You’ll be pulled in quickly to the story, so set aside some good reading time! We’re all hoping there’s a sequel.
